SAFEX sits in Mohammadia, on the eastern side of Algiers — not Ben Aknoun, a mix-up that occasionally surfaces with a different district of the capital. The site is 3 km from Algiers international airport and 10 km from downtown, with parking for 5,000 visitors and 2,000 exhibitors.
Construction of the palace itself began in 1967. The site now hosts the Foire Internationale d'Alger, founded in 1934 — but the fair hasn't always been here: it started on the grounds of the Algiers port, then moved to the Champ de Manœuvres, before eventually relocating to SAFEX once the venue was built.
