Exhibition Stand Design Mistakes to Avoid in Tunisia

A poorly designed exhibition stand is more than a wasted investment, it is a commercial opportunity lost to your competitors who better prepared their participation. In Tunisia, at the Kram Exhibition Centre and Carthage Expo, we see the same mistakes repeated from one edition to the next.

This guide lists the most common design mistakes and explains how to avoid them from the brief stage.

Mistake 1: Designing the Stand Before Defining Objectives

This is the most fundamental and widespread mistake. Many exhibitors arrive at their stand contractor with a visual idea, "I want something blue and white, modern, with screens", without having defined what the stand must accomplish commercially.

Exhibition stand design is not an aesthetic exercise. It is a commercial tool. Every design decision must follow from a precise commercial objective. A stand designed to generate unqualified visitor traffic does not have the same layout as a stand designed for qualified B2B meetings with distributors.

The solution: before briefing your contractor, answer these three questions. What is your main objective at this show? Who are your target visitors? What action do you want them to take at your stand? The design follows from these answers.

Mistake 2: Neglecting Aisle Visibility

A stand that is not visible from the aisles is a stand that generates no spontaneous traffic. At the Kram Exhibition Centre, aisles are long and visitors visually scan stands from the aisle before deciding to approach. This decision takes less than 3 seconds.

Common errors include stands that are too low, facades that do not communicate a clear message from the aisle, graphics too small or too detailed to read from 5 to 10 metres, and the absence of a height element that allows the stand to be located from a distance.

The solution: ask your contractor to show you the 3D rendering from the aisle, at 5 metres distance. If your stand is not immediately identifiable and your main message is not readable from this distance, the design must be revised.

Mistake 3: Closing the Stand Instead of Opening It

An overly closed stand intimidates visitors who do not yet know your brand. Visitors who do not know you need to feel free to enter and exit easily.

The solution: open at least one main face of the stand onto the aisle. Create a natural and welcoming entry area. Reserve more closed spaces — meeting room, storage area — to the back or sides of the stand.

Mistake 4: Overloading Graphics with Text

Stand graphic panels are not brochures. Visitors do not read long texts at a stand. Limit main text on panels to your brand name, your tagline, and three to five keywords maximum. Detailed information goes in your printed materials, your product sheets, and your conversations with visitors.

Mistake 5: Ignoring Venue Technical Constraints

The Kram Exhibition Centre has specific technical constraints that every exhibitor must anticipate before validating their stand design. Height restrictions vary by hall. Fire safety requirements apply to enclosed spaces and materials used. Electrical supply points have precise locations that condition equipment layout.

The solution: obtain the technical plan of your space as soon as your registration is confirmed, send it immediately to your contractor, and verify that the final design is validated against venue technical constraints before fabrication begins.

Mistake 6: Underestimating the Fabrication Budget

The most common budget mistake is comparing incomplete quotes. A quote that includes only design and fabrication, without transport, installation, supervision during the show, and dismantling, is a misleading quote.

The solution: ask each contractor for an all-inclusive, line-by-line quote. Compare scopes before comparing prices.

Mistake 7: Neglecting Team Preparation

The best-designed stand produces no results if the team manning it is not prepared. Define roles, prepare presentation scripts, set daily objectives, and plan commercial materials in sufficient quantity for the full duration of the show.

Mistake 8: Not Planning Post-Show Follow-Up

The value of a Tunisian trade show participation is realised in the weeks after the show. An exhibitor who collects contacts but does not follow up within 48 to 72 hours after the show loses most of the value of their participation.

The solution: plan your post-show follow-up process before the show begins.
